Paddock Boots

Paddock boots are the everyday boot of choice for riders in most English disciplines. They provide protection and support while doing chores around the barn, and are easily paired with half chaps to prevent painful saddle rubs while riding. Their low heel and smart silhouette also makes them fashionable enough to wear around town. Easy transitions between barn work, riding and hitting the town help make paddock boots the favorite footwear for equestrians of all genders, ages and experience levels. To make sure everyone is happily shod, we carry paddock boots designed by Horze Equestrian, B Vertigo and Finntack in sizes suitable for men, women and children.

While versatile and stylish, paddock boots are designed primarily for work rather than for show. Paddock boots feature thick soles to protect the bottom of the rider’s foot from nails, wire, and other hazards that may be encountered around the barn, and a light tread to provide additional grip on the stirrup and traction on muddy or uneven terrain. They also feature a low heel to help prevent the rider’s foot from slipping through the stirrup irons in the event of an accident, and to provide arch support to make the boot comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time.

For riding purposes, paddock boots are often paired with half chaps, creating a look and offering protection similar to that provided by the English tall boot. Unlike English tall boots, paddock boots worn with half chaps don’t require a long break-in period, allow the rider to flex freely through the ankle and heel, are relatively easy to put on and take off, and are available at much lower price points. Also unlike tall boots, paddock boots are an informal footwear and are not considered proper show attire by most English disciplines. Instead, they are frequently worn on trail rides, schooling rides, exercise rides and in casual lessons. A notable exception is the use of brown paddock boots and matching garter straps by children under the age of twelve during Hunter/Jumper competitions.

Paddock boots end just above the ankle and are fastened by laces and zippers. A front laced style, with laces starting at the top of the foot and continuing up the ankle, is considered traditional and remains a popular option. Front laces allow the rider to control the tightness and security of boot. Many contemporary paddock boots feature front zippers, which are designed for extra convenience but limit the degree to which the rider can alter the boots fit. For those who want a traditional look with modern convenience, we carry paddock boots with cosmetic front laces and a working back zipper, running from the base of the heel to the top of the ankle.

Paddock boots are traditionally designed to include a “toe cap” of thick leather that protects the rider’s toes from their horse’s hooves. For those who would benefit from extra protection, steel toed paddock boots are available in men’s, women’s and children’s sizes. If you are interested in more precise manipulation of the stirrup, we carry paddock boots with toes made of extra soft, malleable leather. Many paddock boots also feature purely decorative designs around the toe. Popular designs include punched toe designs, and fancy stitch designs.

Paddock boots are available in a wide array of colors, the most popular being black, brown and tan. Traditionally made out of thick leather, contemporary paddock boots may be found in waxed, smooth and suede leather as well as in synthetic materials. Similar natural and synthetic options are available in the boots lining. Our paddock boots feature soft Cambrelle linings, wool linings, warm faux- fur linings and moisture wick linings depending on your needs and preferences.
