Paddock or Jodhpur Boots

Versatile, comfortable and classy, paddock and jodhpur boots are a staple in every rider’s wardrobe. These boots are durable and comfortable enough to wear for long days of riding and chores at the barn and their relatively short height makes them more convenient to put on and take off than tall boots. Their classic silhouette and slight heel also make paddock boots stylish enough to wear around town.

For riding purposes, paddock boots are often paired with half chaps which create a similar look and offer similar protection to tall boots at a fraction of the price. Considered an informal alternative to tall boots, paddock boots and half chaps are often worn by pleasure riders and are suitable as a casual schooling option for most English disciplines. It is tradition for children under the age of twelve in hunt seat competitions to wear paddock boots, jodhpurs and garter straps, instead of the tall boots worn by adult competitors. The notable exception is the English discipline of Saddle Seat, which requires the use of jodhpur boots in all formal settings. Because of their comfort, durability and ease of wear, many riders choose to use these short ankle high riding boots as their everyday barn and riding boot. We carry paddock boots and jodhpur boots for men, women and children by Horze Equestrian, B Vertigo, and Finntack.

Anatomy of Short Riding Boots

Designed to provide comfort, support and protection during long hours in the saddle or working the farm, most paddock boots and jodhpur boots share a few common features. Paddock and jodhpur boots are available in the colors of black, brown and tan. Traditionally they are made from leather, which can be waxed, suede or smooth, depending on individual preference. Recently, paddock boot are also being offered in rubber and other synthetic materials. Features such as water proof exteriors and comfort padding around the ankle are also commonly available.

Structurally, paddock and jodhpur boots are defined by their durable soles and ankle height. Thick, sturdy soles protect the bottoms of the foot from nails, wire and other potential hazards around the barn. They also help to provide traction in uneven or muddy terrain and grip on the stirrup irons. All paddock and jodhpur boots also feature a low heel which helps to prevent the foot from slipping through stirrup in the event of an accident in the saddle and provides arch support to keep you comfortable as you work around the barn. Paddock and jodhpur boots are designed to end just above the ankle, providing the joint with protection and stability. In many cases, the boot’s shaft is reinforced with ribbed elastic to provide optimal fit, support and flexibility through the ankle. Most paddock boots feature a rubber spur rest on the back of the heel. While considered general-purpose riding boots, we offer a wide selection of paddock and jodhpur boots with features sure to meet your specific needs.

Traditionally, paddock boots feature a “toe cap” of thick leather designed to shield your foot in the event that it is accidentally stepped on by your horse. Steel-toed paddock boots are also available for those who deal with young, hot or excitable horses. Steel-toed and leather toe caped paddock boots are available in sizes suitable for men, women and children. We also carry boots that cover the top of the foot in extra soft leather, which allows for more precise manipulation of the stirrup. The lining inside of the paddock boot offers comfort more than protection. Our paddock and jodhpur boots feature soft Cambrelle linings, wool linings, warm faux- fur linings and moisture wick linings depending on your needs and preferences. As a final touch, many paddock boots feature attractive designs around the toe of the boot. Popular designs include punched toe designs, and fancy stitch designs.

Paddock Boots

Laces, zippers and a shorter length make paddock boots the everyday boots of choice for many equestrians. Laces and zippers make the boot easier to put on and get off while also decreasing the amount of time it takes to break in a new pair, letting you focus more on schooling your horse and less on pinched ankles and painful blisters.

Traditionally, paddock boots are designed in a front laced style, with laces starting at the top of the foot and continuing up the ankle. Such lacing allows the rider to control the tightness and security of the boot. Front zippers are a contemporary style designed for extra convenience. The zipper replaces the traditional laces running from the top of the foot to the top of the ankle. Front zipper boots usually feature elastic panels around the sides of the ankle. For those who want a traditional look with modern convenience, we also carry paddock boots with front laces and back zippers. Such front laces are typically cosmetic and can not be used to control tightness of the boot.

Jodhpur Boots

Jodhpur boots are defined by their slip-on nature. Featuring elastic sides, or straps that buckle around the ankle, jodhpur boots lack the functional laces and zippers of paddock boots. Jodhpur boots are worn by Saddle Seat riders during formal competitions. Most English riders outside of the Saddle Seat discipline pair jodhpur boots with half chaps for informal rides. Some riders find that the jodhpur boots lack of laces creates a slimmer, more elegant leg line than that of the paddock boot. Jodhpur boots are also considered fashionable street wear for both men and women.
