Tall Riding Boots

Formal, functional and fashionable tall riding boots are an essential part of every rider’s wardrobe. Typically black or brown in color and usually made of leather, although synthetic options are available, tall riding boots cover the rider’s foot and leg up to the knee, increasing stability and grip, and preventing saddle rubs caused by stirrup leathers. Tall riding boots generally feature smooth, flexible soles to allow for a greater degree of control over the stirrup irons as well as low heels to prevent the rider’s foot from sliding through the stirrup iron in the event of an accident. Modern tall boots feature inside front or back zippers that run from the knee to the base of the foot, making them easier to put on and take off and reducing break in time.

Tall riding boots are suitable for wear in competitions, clinics, formal lessons and fox hunts. Many choose to wear tall boots for everyday riding as well, although it’s just as common to reserve them for shows and special occasions. Types of tall boots include field boots, dress boots and dressage boots, with each type of boot designed to best meet the needs of a specific English discipline. The Baroque “Spanish Top” style, which is cut higher on the outside of the knee than on the inside is popular across all tall boot types. Field boots, dress boots and dressage boots are considered three season boots. Winter riding boots are non-discipline specific knee high boots perfect for those looking to ride during the winter without sacrificing form or function. Our tall boots are designed by Horze Equestrian, B Vertigo and Finntack.

Field Boots

Typically worn by fox hunters, jumpers, equitation riders and cross country eventers, field boots are distinguished from dress and dressage boots by their front laced ankles. Flexible and comfortable, field boots are well suited for disciplines that include long rides and jumping, as their ankles are designed to allow riders to sink deep in their heels. The degree to which an ankle drops on a field boot is largely determined by quality and softness of the leather and the stylistic cut of the boot. Some contemporary boots use synthetic material through ankle, eliminating the need for front laces. Stylistically, the front laces featured by field boots are considered to be a more casual or rustic look when compared with the smooth surface of dress boots. We carry field boots designed by Horze Equestrian and B Vertigo.

Dress Boots

The most formal of the tall English riding boots, dress boots are typically worn by dressage riders, event riders and showjumping riders. They are also considered proper formal attire for fox hunters and have recently been gaining popularity in hunter/jumper circles. Dress boots feature no front laces and are available in both supple and stiff leather. Rather than offering flexibility through the heel, dress boots are designed to provide structure and support for the long leg and subtle aids characteristic of dressage riding. Dressage specific boots are too stiff for back zippers, and instead feature inside front zippers. Traditional pull on dressage boots are also available. Our dress boots are by Horze Equestrian and B Vertigo.

Winter Riding Boots

Tall winter riding boots are ideal for those who wish to remain warm and comfortable while schooling in cold weather. Durable and stylish, winter riding boots are insulated and water-proof, keeping the rider’s feet and legs warm and dry in addition to providing them with grip and support. Winter riding boots are a functional, informal boot primarily used for schooling and are generally considered to be all- purpose boots, having not been tailored to meet the needs of any specific discipline. Our tall winter riding boots by Horze Equestrian and Finntack are available for men, women and children.
