Driving Bits

Horze Equestrian has driving bits designed for harness racing and pleasure driving by Finntack and Zilco. Driving bits are available in a variety of designs in snaffle or curb styles allowing for proportional control needed on the track, trail or in the show arena.

Driving Bit Types

Snaffle bits are among the most common types of driving bits. Half spoon style bits are very popular, offering extra support for steering as the dropped arm resists sliding through the horse’s mouth. Loose ring style bits are also popular as they discourage the horse from bearing down on the bit. For stronger horses that require more control, double ring, Wilson or extended ring bits are a good option. This bit offers two rings and can be quite severe as the rings press the horse’s face between the cheekpiece rings. Mullen style mouthpieces are popular as are single jointed mouthpieces.

Overchecks

An overcheck bit is often used when driving, especially in racing. This is a thin bit with small rings that attaches to the overcheck or bearing rein and prevents the horse from lowering its head beyond a determined point, preventing the horse from accidentally catching on the cart shafts. This is designed to be used in conjunction with the standard driving bit.

Driving Bit Materials

As with English bits, stainless steel is the most common material used in driving bits, offering a neutral taste and strong durability. Leather covered bits are a more traditional choice that is very popular for breaking young horses to harness. Leather mouthpieces require more care to maintain a safe condition, but the softer mouthpiece encourages the horse to chew the bit, making it well accepted. In driving bits the leather is often extended to create a bit guard, protecting sensitive lips from rubs or pinching. Rubber covered mouthpieces are also popular for young or sensitive horses.

Horze Equestrian offers the driving bits you need to compete at the top levels, or to race in all track conditions. Zilco and Finntack create high quality, durable bits for all types of driving horses.
