English Bits

Horze Equestrian has English bits designed for all horses and riders. In the English disciplines, rider’s bit choice is often structured around which bits are legal for competition, tradition and, of course, which bit provides the greatest level of comfort and communication for their horse.

Snaffle Bits

Snaffle bits are among the most common style of English bit. Dressage riders often favor a loose ring snaffle with a single or double jointed mouthpiece as this style of bit offers a free moving ring that helps to discourage the horse from leaning on the bit, helping to encourage self-carriage. Eggbutt style bits are also a popular choice for riders that prefer a fixed ring. In the show hunters the D-ring style of bit with a mouthpiece that is suitable to the horse’s preference is very popular. Other styles of English snaffle bits include Full cheek snaffles that feature narrow arms that rise above and below the mouthpiece; commonly used with keepers to help stabilize the bit, full cheeks assist in steering. Boucher bits are a great choice for horses that prefer a very stable feel in the horse’s mouth.

Combination Bits

Combination bits are those that feature both aspects of a snaffle and a curb bit offering direct control and indirect poll pressure. These bits are commonly used with two reins, or with a bit converter and a single rein. Pelhams are a common type of combination bit and are very popular with hunter equitation riders. The severity of the Pelham bit is dependent on the length of the shank; a longer shank creates more leverage for greater control. Gag style bits are popular for riders who have stronger horses, or those who are competing at speed like in the jumper or eventing disciplines. Sliding gag bits must be used with a special cheekpiece that allows it to move along the cheekpiece to create leverage. European or Dutch style gag bits feature two to three additional rings allowing for a flexible amount of leverage based on which ring the curb rein in attached.

Curb Bits

Curb bits offer indirect control, exerting pressure along the horse’s poll through the use of leverage. Curb bits feature a curb chain or strap to help create a leverage point. Curb bits offer limited steering control. The most common curb bit used in English riding is the Weymouth curb bit. They are used in conjunction with a bradoon style snaffle bit to create a double or full bridle. The double bridle is commonly used in upper level dressage competition and is less commonly used in hunter shows.

No matter what type of bit your horse needs, Horze Equestrian offers a large selection of styles and sizes for horses and ponies. Horze Equestrian has quality bits designed for hunter/jumpers, dressage, eventing as well as English bits that are perfect for schooling and casual riding.
